The University at Albany men’s basketball team has added its first transfer for the 2023-24 season.
Tyler Bertram, who played last season at the University of Alabama at Birmingham of Conference USA, announced his commitment in a social media post Monday.
Bertram, a 6-foot-5 graduate guard, had a limited role for the Blazers, coming off the bench behind all-conference guards Jordan Walker and Eric Gaines to score 20 points in 58 minutes.
“I really wanted to play a lot in my last year. Just kind of go out with a good finish,” Bertram said of his reason for transferring.
Before playing at UAB, Bertram spent two seasons at Binghamton, like UAlbany a member of the America East conference. He started 13 games as a sophomore, averaging 10.8 points in 27.9 minutes per game. In his junior year, he played in all 29 games with 18 starts, scoring 9 points per game and shooting 39.1 percent from 3-point range. He put up 21 points, eight shy of his career high, against the Great Danes on Feb. 16, 2022. (UAlbany won, 68-67.)
UAlbany will be Bertram’s fourth school. He started his career with a season at UNC Charlotte.
The UAlbany staff also reached out to Bertram when he was in the transfer portal last season and quickly contacted him when he went back in.
“When I entered the portal, they were literally the first people to call. Like, within minutes,” Bertram said. “The first time they recruited me I was a little worried about transferring in-conference just because that can be looked down upon, but I have such a good relationship and still do with that Binghamton staff, and they understand that the Albany guys are great guys, so it’s just been easy.”
Bertram will have to play his former team twice next season.
“It’ll probably be weird, but I’m excited,” he said.
