NISKAYUNA — Incumbent Supervisor Jaime Lynn Puccioni wants a second two-year term.
But to hold onto her seat, the college professor-turned-politician will have to fend off a challenge from Brian Backus, the Republican candidate and career military man.
Puccioni, in a news release, listed her achievements since taking office in January 2022, but said there’s even more work to be done.
“We’ve accomplished a great deal together over the past 15 months and it’s important to keep building on that success,” Puccioni stated. “Niskayuna expects and deserves a leader who will continue to work collaboratively to meet the needs of our community.”
The June 27 primary election will determine if Puccioni or the 63-year-old Backus get on the Conservative Party line.
He is at the top of a ticket that includes Jerome Chao and Hamayun “Joey” Faizy, both seeking a seat on the Town Board.
Backus, who retired as a colonel from the 109th Airlift Wing in Scotia, later worked as a confidential assistant for former Supervisor Yasmine Syed for two years. He’s also served on the Niskayuna Board of Education.
“During these divisive times, I have a proven track record of working collaboratively with people to get things done,” he said. “My platform really is fiscal responsibility and ensuring that we include and listen to all members of the community, and then once we reach a decision, that we speak with a unified voice to do what’s best for all the people in Niskayuna.
Puccioni headlines a Democratic slate that features incumbent Town Board member Jessica Brennan, Bill McPartlon as well as Justice Stephen Swinton and Town Clerk Michele Martinelli.
