ALBANY – The University at Albany’s Scott Marr said he wouldn’t be coaching lacrosse if not for his mother, Dorothy, who died Tuesday at 88 years old.
After missing practice on Wednesday, Marr was back on the sideline Friday night for the Great Danes’ 14-6 loss to 17th-ranked Yale before 2,278 fans at Casey Stadium
“My mom is really the reason why I’m coaching today,” he said. “Had some tough times in my life early and my mom was there to kind of guide me through it. She’s been around for all the games and obviously my parents traveled to all our games when they were able to before my dad (Fred) passed away (in 2017) and it was always nice to have them at games.”
A photograph of Scott Marr and his mother was shown on the scoreboard during a moment of silence prior to Friday’s game. Marr appeared to wipe his eyes before the opening faceoff.
“It’s been a long week, just emotionally,” Marr said. “But once the game kind of started, I was pretty good.”
UAlbany fell behind 4-1 in the first quarter and 5-3 at halftime. Yale goalie Jared Paquette made 13 first-half saves, and 16 for the game, though Marr thought his team made it too easy for Paquette.

Yale (7-4) opened the second half on a man advantage and Leo Johnson scored an unassisted goal for a 6-3 lead. Yale outscored UAlbany 5-2 in the third quarter for a 10-5 lead and poured in four more goals in the fourth quarter.
The Great Danes didn’t help themselves with 12 second-half turnovers and 20 for the game.
