Ithaca firefighters extinguish inaccessible homeless encampment fire

The Ithaca Fire Department extinguished a large fire which occurred Wednesday evening in Ithaca’s homeless encampment known as ‘The Jungle.’ The blaze was located behind Agway on Fulton St. and required the use of over 1,100 feet of hose — or more than the length of three football fields — to put out.

According to a press release issued by Assistant Chief James Wheal, Ithaca Fire responded to reports of the fire just before 10 p.m. As engines were en route to the scene, Tompkins 911 informed firefighters that there had been multiple calls concerning structure fire.

The first two arriving engines deducted that the best access to the fire would be from Fulton St., as the location of the structure lacked any direct access. Another engine arrived to assist and the crews then utilized more than 1,100 feet of hose to extinguish the blaze.

The makeshift structure was destroyed by the fire. Firefighters determined that no one was inside the structure at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. Ithaca Police also responded to the scene.
