This single mom launched businesses that help reduce clutter and make old things new again

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A single mother and homecare nurse, Jackie McCaig, 29, is proud to call herself a “garbage picker” and “clean freak.” And that’s because those character traits have led her to open two new businesses within the last six months.

With Purely Cleaning & Organization Co., McCaig offers all types of cleaning and decluttering services, from bedrooms and basements, to garages and attics. Her second business, purelyDistressed, allows McCaig to turn old furniture into new “treasures.”

“I began [decluttering] as a hobby, and once I began making money off of it, I realized this was going to be the best way to provide a comfortable life for my boys,” said McCaig. “For the furniture business, I’m a big Facebook Marketplace and thrift store shopper. I am also a garbage picker. I drive around on Thursday nights when people throw away their furniture, and I find great, real wood furniture.”
