Academy students in Canton study bioluminescence
Headmaster Karl Doty and students at the St. Catherine of Siena Academy in Canton use glow sticks to demonstrate and experience bioluminescence (which relates to the Earth Week theme devoted to algae). In simple terms, bioluminescence is a chemical reaction between luciferin and oxygen where light is emitted by an organism. For example, a firefly emits light with a yellow-green color. This activity was part of a workshop presented by Dr. Dana Barry, coordinator of National Earth Week for the NNY Section of the American Chemical Society. Photo submitted by Dana Barry.
