A man sustained serious injuries Friday when the car he was driving crashed on Interstate 88, left the roadway and plunged into the Chenango River, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sheriff’s investigators said a westbound 1991 Honda sedan was involved in the single-vehicle crash near the Exit 3 on-ramp in the Town of Fenton at about 11:40 a.m.
The car’s driver and female passenger made it out of the cabin and onto the roof of the vehicle as it sank into the river, officials said.
Sheriff’s deputies removed both occupants from the Chenango River and they were transported to the UHS Wilson Medical Center.

The sheriff’s office said the driver has suffered life-threatening injuries, and the passenger suffered minor injuries.
Officials have closed the right, westbound lane of I-88 Friday afternoon while the crash investigation continues.
