ALBANY – The University at Albany men’s track and field team, which had won 17 consecutive America East outdoor titles entering this weekend, saw its reign end on Sunday.Â
The Great Danes finished second at the America East outdoor track and field championships, held at UAlbany’s Track and Field Complex.
The UAlbany men finished with 158 points, second to champion UMass Lowell’s 198 points.
“Seventeen straight, that’s unheard of in any sport,” UAlbany head coach Roberto Vives said. “We’re just excited to get to this point and I’m glad that our student-athletes competed all the way through. Nobody gave up.”
On the other hand, UAlbany women’s track and field extended its streak to 14 straight America East outdoor championships. The Great Danes were on top with 218.5 points, trailed by the second-place Binghamton women with 131.5 points.
“I’m just thrilled about the women,” Vives said. “They really work hard together. They’re committed. This year, we had a lot of challenges. On the men’s side, UAlbany sophomore Travis Williams won the 100 meter title in 10.22 seconds and the 200 in 21.18.Â
“I kind of botched my start (in the 100) a little bit, so I had to work too much in between, but I got the job done,” Williams said.
UAlbany junior Louis Gordon set a championship meet record in the long jump with an effort of 25 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
But UMass Lowell dominated the distance events. In the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, the River Hawks placed six runners in the top eight in each race and scored a combined 58 points. UAlbany had only three points in those events.
