Two NYU business school students, Franco Medina Angulo and Sergio Palomino Ruiz, were shot and killed while vacationing in Puerto Rico over the weekend.
The victims were both international students from Peru, enrolled in the Stern School of Business. They were traveling with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday, according to school officials.
Angulo and Ruiz were bystanders “caught in an altercation between two unrelated groups” when shots were fired Saturday morning, said NYU spokesperson John Beckman. Beckman described the boys as “victims of senseless, tragic gunfire.”
The shooting occurred in San Juan, outside a business on Loiza Street, reported Puerto Rico police. The Criminal Investigations Corps launched an investigation into the incident and shared a video on their Facebook page, showing a woman firing a gun from the sidewalk.
The police are currently asking for help in identifying the woman who fired the shots, reports NBC News.
Beckman added that the university has been in touch with the other students who had been traveling with the victims, and has offered support and aid.
“NYU has also reached out to the families of the slain students to provide whatever assistance we can and to express the sympathies of the university community,” Beckman added in the statement.
The Stern School of Business has said that a scholarship will be created in each of Angulo and Ruiz’s names, reports NBC New York. A fundraiser was also set up to raise donations for the families, and has already amassed nearly $65,000 as of late Tuesday afternoon.
“NYU grieves today with the family, loved ones, and friends of these students, whose lives ended tragically, suddenly, and far too early,” Beckman said.
