HALFMOON — The first ever monthly basketball luncheon held at the Impact Athletic Center in November featured a Zoom call from Shenendehowa graduate and Sacramento Kings guard Kevin Huerter. Thursday, Huerter thrilled the latest gathering with him being in attendance personally, although he wished his season was still ongoing.
On the second Thursday of each month, basketball fans gather at Impact Athletic Center to hear speakers from the Capital Region.
Huerter served as a starter this season with the Kings, a squad that made the playoffs for the first time since 2006 as the Western Conference’s No. 3 seed. Sacramento, a team that captivated its fans with a 48-34 campaign led by Coach of the Year Mike Brown, dropped a thrilling seven-game series against the Golden State Warriors.
Huerter, a 6-foot-7 guard playing in his first season with the Kings after being acquired in a July trade with the Atlanta Hawks, enjoyed the finest season of his career as he averaged 15.2 points per game, shot 48.5 percent from the field and 40.2 percent on 3-point shots. He also competed in the 3-Point Shooting Contest at the All-Star Game held in Salt Lake City. The fifth-year pro is disappointed with the playoff result as the Kings led the series 3-2.
“I think with the body of work I put together was one of the better seasons of my career so far,” Huerter said. “Going into a tough series, obviously against Golden State, and individually not playing as well as I wanted and as a team not reaching the success we wanted definitely made it a sour end to the year. If you look at the bigger picture and the expectations that were put on us at the end of the year, we would have taken the results. Once you are in that moment, you want more.”
