Syracuse, N.Y. – Meaghan and Emma Tyrrell’s offensive efforts Sunday against Johns Hopkins aided in Syracuse’s 25-8 victory to advance to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals.
The crushing victory came after a two-week break after falling 15-9 to defending national champions North Carolina in the ACC tournament. The sisters had an uncharacteristic game with Meaghan scoring two goals and Emma recording just one.
“(This game) was definitely a huge revival game,” Emma Tyrrell said. “It really gave us a lot of energy coming out and throughout the whole game you could just really feel it.”
The sisters combined for 17 points and contributed on 15 of SU’s goals, with Meaghan recording nine points and Emma picking up eight. Meaghan even assisted on two of Emma’s career-high seven goals.
“Unreal. Unbelievable,” Johns Hopkins first-year coach Tim McCormack said about the Tyrrell sisters’ performance. “They were all over the place. They left their mark in every area today.”
Both made history.
Meaghan recorded her 100th point this season with a feed from Olivia Adamson in front of the Blue Jays’ net, seconds before halftime.
Meaghan’s nine points, including a six-goal performance, made her the program’s career record holder in both points (52) and goals (37) in NCAA tournament games.
Emma tied the school’s NCAA tournament single-game record with seven goals, matching Meaghan’s seven goals in SU’s 20-8 win against Loyola in 2021.
During the two-week period without any games, Meaghan said the team focused on itself and how it can play like it did in the beginning of the season.
On a weekend other top seeds survived tough NCAA openers, Syracuse cruised like it did so often during its perfect start.
SU entered the NCAA tournament having lost its regular-season finale against Boston College and in the semifinal round of the ACC tournament.
But Syracuse looked like a national title contender with a stellar all-around performance against the Blue Jays.
