Man charged with felony assault after attacking prosecutor in court

Deputies arrested a Bath resident following an attack at Centralized Arraignment Court in Steuben County.

According to a news release, deputies arrested James Elward, 57, after an assistant district attorney was pushed and struck.

In addition to the attack, Elward is accused of acting disorderly during court, which resulted in proceedings being paused.

He was charged with a felony count of assault, as well as criminal contempt and obstruction.

Elward will answer the charges at a later date.
