A Bronx man was fatally shot in the chest Wednesday morning several blocks from his home, according to the NYPD.
Police responding to a 6:30 a.m. 911 call on Fort Independence St. near Bailey Place in Van Cortlandt Village found 27-year-old Jeremy Valencia with a mortal gunshot wound.
Emergency Medical Service workers took him to Montefiore Medical Center, where he died.
Neighbor Jajaira, 37, who declined to give her last name, said that she was with her son when she heard shots ring out Wednesday morning and went to her motherโs bedroom window to find out what happened.
โI heard two gunshots this morning,โ she told the Daily News. โWe thought maybe it was a car backfiring at first. Me and my son. Cause we never hear things like that around here.
โI went to the window really quickly,with my son behind me and I wouldnโt let him to the window,โ Jajaira continued. โAnd thatโs when I seen the body outside. Face down. He was in the street between two cars.โ
She said that police arrived soon after and started life-saving measures.
โHe was face down and then went I went to the window the cops flipped him over, and they were doing chest compressions โ CPR,โ Jajaira said. โIt didnโt look like he was responding. And then the EMT workers showed up and they were doing the same thing on him and they put him on a gurney and put him in the ambulance.

โI saw blood on the floor. I could see it [the wound]. I wasnโt really trying to pay attention. I only saw one wound and I just was, like, kinda freaked out by it.โ
The fatal shooting shocked neighbors who said that it was usually a quiet neighborhood.
โYou hear arguments people fighting over parking or little things like that, but shots over here? No,โ said Maureen, 61, who declined to give her last name.
Valenciaโs family, who lives nearby, was too distraught to speak.
โWeโre still processing it,โ Jeremyโs older brother Christopher told The News.
