Liverpool superintendent responds to state’s new guidance on Native American mascots

Liverpool superintendent Daniel Henner said his district is taking steps to abide by the New York State Board of Education’s ban on nicknames, mascots and logos tied to Native American culture, but he is concerned the state is sending mixed messages.

The state unanimously voted to end the use of nicknames, mascots and logos with any connection to Indigenous people during a state Board of Regents meeting last month. The rule went into effect on May 3.

The Seneca Indian Nation announced Wednesday it would allow the Salamanca School District to continue using its Warrior nickname and logo despite the state’s ban on schools’ use of Indigenous imagery. The schools in the district are located in the nation’s Allegany Territory and have large percentages of Native American students and staff.
