Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council holds annual awards ceremony

MIDDLETOWN- The Paramount Theater in Middletown was filled with young people and their families for the annual Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Councilโ€™s Essay and Poster Contest Awards Ceremony on Friday morning.ย  Hundreds were in attendance to recognize the countyโ€™s youth for their creative efforts to support this yearโ€™s theme:ย  โ€œLetโ€™s Make the OC a Drug-Free County! #845โ€

Participants could either create an original poster or essay in different categories, grades 1 โ€“ 3, grades 4 โ€“ 6, grades 7 โ€“ 9, and grades 10 โ€“ 12.ย  There was also a digital design category for grades 7-12.

Winners received a cash prize, as well as an original copy of their submission professionally framed.

Submissions were judged on several criteria including impact of message, integration of the annual theme, originality and creativity, and design.ย  Submissions were accepted in either English or Spanish.

This yearโ€™s event marked the 36th Annual Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council Substance Abuse Prevention Poster Design Contest, which continues to grow in participation each year.ย  The council works closely with area schools to promote the event.ย  Plans are already underway to develop next yearโ€™s theme.
