DUANESBURG — A sheriff’s deputy shot a dog Monday after allegedly being attacked by the animal.
The Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office said in a release Monday that a deputy responded to Duane Avenue after a report of two loose dogs at around 10 a.m.
One of the dogs, a German shepherd, began to growl and bark at the deputy, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy tried to take shelter in his patrol vehicle, but the dog allegedly chased him and bit his lower leg. The deputy continued to try to get away from the dog, when the animal charged again, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputy fired once from his service weapon, striking the dog in the shoulder, the sheriff said. “The deputy was in fear of being seriously injured by the dog,” the statement read.
The deputy was taken to Ellis Hospital for treatment of the dog bite. The shepherd had surgery Monday at Upstate Veterinary Animal Hospital in Latham.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
