Boy, 15, dies subway surfing on train crossing Williamsburg Bridge to Brooklyn

A 15-year-old boy died subway surfing on top of a train crossing the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn, police said Tuesday.

A girl traveling with the victim, who did not climb onto the top of the J train as it left Manhattan, watched in horror as her friend was struck by a low metal beam, fell between two cars and was run over by the train, a police source said.

The train was rumbling over the East River about 6:45 p.m. Monday when the teen and his companion went walking between train cars.

A few moments later, the boy climbed onto the trainโ€™s roof. The girl followed but only far enough to peer over the top, a police source said.

When the victim turned to look back at the girl he was struck by the beam and toppled off the train car, cops said.

He was run over by the train and died at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

The incident was hauntingly similar to the death of Kaโ€™Von Wooden, a 15-year-old boy also died riding atop a J train in December.

Wooden was subway surfing on a Manhattan-bound train as it crossed the Williamsburg Bridge and approached the Delancey Street/Essex Street station on the Lower East Side, police said.

He fell off the train and made contact with the third rail about 11:30 a.m. Dec. 1. He died at the scene.

His mother told the Daily News that Kaโ€™Von was autistic and wouldnโ€™t have done something so dangerous if others hadnโ€™t dared him.

โ€œItโ€™s not something he would do on his own,โ€ his mother Yโ€™Vonda Maxwell, 53, said at the time. โ€œHe was a kid on the spectrum. He got in on the wrong crowd. He was bullied because he was autistic.โ€

In August, 15-year-old Hamza Mohamed lost an arm when he fell while trying to subway surf atop a Forest Hills-bound R train in the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave. station, cops said.
