How proposed salary hikes for Buffalo’s elected officials compare to pay in other cities

Buffalo would pay its mayor significantly more than mayors in six comparable cities, if salary hikes recommended by a city commission are adopted by the Buffalo Common Council.ย 

Byron W. Brown would earnย $178,519 a year, about $61,000 more than the mayor of Pittsburgh and nearly $38,000 more than the mayor of Cleveland, both of which are larger cities, according to the Citizen Salary Review Commission, which recommended raises for Buffalo’s elected officials.ย 

Brown, the mayor of New York’s second-largest city, would also be paid more than the mayors of four smaller New York cities โ€“ Yonkers, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany.ย 

The new budget approved by the Common Council Monday kept intact a 4.47% hike in the residential property tax rate that Brown proposed, but overall spending fell to $576,994,950 from Brownโ€™s $582 million plan.

Buffalo Common Council members also stand to earn more than council members in the six comparable cities if they approve salary hikes the commission recommended.ย 

The commission has suggested a salary of $84,472 for each of Buffaloโ€™s nine Council members, which is thousands of dollars more than council members in Cleveland and Pittsburgh make currently. Clevelandโ€™s 17 council membersย earn about $80,133. Pittsburghโ€™s nine…
