ALBANY- Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,Walden) is joining his colleagues in calling for whole and 2 percent milk to be sold in New York schools.ย The federal government banned whole and 2 percent milk in schools based on an outdated belief that it led to childhood obesity.ย Since these milk varieties were removed from schools, there has been no measurable improvement in childhood obesity rates.ย Now, there are studies demonstrating whole and 2 percent milk play a role in good childhood health.
ย โWhole and 2% milk are important to the nutrition of school-aged children.ย The benefits of these milk varieties are being missed out on in schools and weโd like to change that.ย Allowing New York schools to purchase local whole and 2% milk will ensure children have the nutrition they require to grow both strong and smart,โ said Maher, who is on the Assembly Committee on Children and Families and a vocal proponent of school meals for all students.
Surprising to some, whole milk is actually 97ย percent-free and provides 13 essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fats needed by children.ย Studies also point out whole and 2 percent milk contribute to reduced risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure, increased satiation without leading to weight gain and improved sleep.
