Track and field can provide some interesting challenges for competitors choosing to take part in multiple events. Harriet Healey dealt with such a scenario Saturday at the 80th Eddy Meet.
The Ballston Spa junior posted a victory in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.08 seconds. Approximately 15 minutes later, Healey rallied to edge Columbiaโs Ava Weiss to capture the championship in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:03.672.
Weiss crossed the line in 1:03.678 in the closest finish of the day.
โAva Weiss is a freshman and she runs like crazy. She has been my target this year to chase and makes me better,โ Healey said Saturday. โI really wanted to beat her today because I lost to her atย Colonie Relays. This past week, I just got down my steps for the 400 hurdles because I used to stutter really bad. In the race, I just had to focus, count the steps and donโt focus on what is around you.โ
For her efforts, Healey has been selected as the Times Unionโs Girls’ Athlete of the Week for the period May 15-21.
The two wins at the Eddy Meet landed Healey Girls’ Athlete of the Meet honors. She accounted for 20 of the Scotties’ 25 points scored in finishing seventh in the team standings.
Healey earned Times Union second-team all-star honors during the winter for the 300 and last spring for the 400 hurdles. The junior was all smiles landing two gigantic trophies for her victories at the Eddy Meet, an event being held for the first time since 2019.
โIt is great with these huge trophies,โ Healey said. โIโve never been to a meet like this. Iโm excited.โ
