Memorial Day 2023: From grocery stores to government offices, what’s open, closed in NYC?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The long Memorial Day weekend — the unofficial start of summer — is almost here. And Monday is the day Americans honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. The holiday was first widely observed in 1868 to remember and pay tribute to those who died during the Cvil War.

Here is a list of what is closed and/or open on Monday, May 29.

Are grocery stores open?

Yes. Most major regional grocery store chains are open during regular hours on Memorial Day. This includes Trader Joe’s, Target, ShopRite, Wegmans, Whole Foods and more.

Are restaurants open?

Yes. Most national chains, local restaurants and fast-food joints are open on Memorial Day. This includes Longhorn Steakhouse, Chili’s, Olive Garden, Panera Bread, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Pizza Hut and more.

Other businesses and services that are closed:

Costco: Costco traditionally closes on several major holidays, including Memorial Day.

Banks: Most banks are closed.

USPS: U.S. Postal Service offices are closed on all major holidays, including Memorial Day.

Staten Island Advance: The newspaper will not publish.

Financial Markets: Markets are closed.

Government offices: City, state and federal offices are all closed.

Courts: Federal and state courts are closed.

Schools: New York City public schools are closed, and Memorial Day is also a holiday for the Archdiocese of New York.

Sanitation: There will be no trash or recycling collection, nor street cleaning, on Monday.

Transportation:

The Staten Island Ferry: The ferry will operate on a holiday schedule on Monday, with service provided every 30 minutes throughout the day. Departures will be on the hour and half hour from each terminal.

The Staten Island Railway (SIR): The SIR will supplement early Friday afternoon service with additional trains to help New Yorkers get an early start on the three-day weekend. It will operate on a normal schedule on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, May…
