The Tri-City ValleyCats managed only six hits on Thursday afternoon in an 8-2 loss to the Windy City ThunderBolts in the rubber match of their three-game series in Crestwood, Ill.
The ValleyCats fell to 5-7 entering a three-game series at the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things that begins Friday.
It was a bullpen game for the ValleyCats’ pitching staff on Thursday. Andrew Edwards, typically a reliever, started and went three innings. He allowed three runs, all in the third inning, and three hits while striking out five.
Tri-City shaved the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth inning on Cito Culver’s RBI single to right that scored Josh Broughton.Â
But the ThunderBolts (5-6) broke open the game with two runs in the sixth off Tri-City reliever Brett Hanewich and three more in the eighth off Alex McKenney.
Broughton had two hits and scored a run. Windy City’s Bren Spillane and Carson Matthews each had two RBIs.
