Residents in the Binghamton area will have a chance to attend several parades and other events this weekend to mark the official observance of Memorial Day.
The holiday, originally known as “Decoration Day,” was established three years after the Civil War as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers, according to theย U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
After World War I, the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, to be observed on the last Monday in May.
Here’s how Binghamton, Johnson City, Vestal and several other localities will mark Memorial Day.
