In a nose-to-nose argument, with Aaron Boone insisting that he missed four strikes that staring pitcher Clarke Schmidt had thrown in the first inning, home-plate umpire Edwin Moscoso wiped his cheek and told the overheated Yankees manager: “You just spit in my face.”

Boone had been ejected for the fourth time this season and second time in a four-game span, and he was getting his money’s worth before leaving the field during Thursday night’s 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium. The accidental spit could lead to a suspension.

But as angry as he was over the missed calls and Moscoco’s disrespect for walking away — can you blame the guy when he’s catching spittle? — Boone insisted he doesn’t want robo umps … even though they probably can handle flying saliva better.

“I don’t want [robo umps],” Boone said.
During the argument, Boone held up four fingers, signaling Boone thought the plate umpire missed four calls on pitches by Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt. A graphic posted by the Yankees’ YES Network indicated at least six of Schmidt’s pitches that caught the edge of the strike zone were called balls.
“Clearly, he shouldn’t have had to throw almost 30 pitches in that first inning,” Boone said. “But, no, I’m not advocating for the robo. I think these guys do for the most part a great job and work really hard at it. When you’re playing for a lot, there’s going to be some issues from time to time, as simple as that.
“I should not have been thrown out of that game. I was very calm, didn’t do much at all. And then [first base umpire Chris Guccione, the crew chief] was holding me back and just telling me — so I didn’t need to be restrained. The dismissive attitude in walking away, I took exception to.”
