GUILDERLAND — Traffic may seem more congested than ever around the Northway ramp to Crossgates Mall, but that is expected to change later this summer, once construction of a roundabout is complete.
The project, which started April 3, is helmed by the Capital District Transportation Authority in conjunction with the town of Guilderland and Crossgates Mall. CDTA spokesperson Emily DeVito said construction is on schedule and is expected to end in late July.
Why put a roundabout at Crossgates Mall?
The project is intended to improve traffic flow for both CDTA and other drivers, CDTA said upon the project’s launch. It is also part of a project to develop a third rapid transit bus line, known as the Purple Line, between downtown Albany and stops such as Crossgates Mall.
The roundabout is also necessary for the construction of the Costco Wholesale store, per a state Department of Transportation requirement, said Guilderland Supervisor Peter Barber. Construction of a Costco was officially approved earlier this month.
Barber said the project will also address the area’s higher-than-average accident history, congestion and vehicle idling.
What roads are closed?
According to DeVito, the project is in its second phase, which is scheduled to last until June 8. During this time, Crossgates Mall Road will be a one-lane road in both directions and the on-ramp to the Northway northbound will be closed for left turns from Crossgates Mall.
