Vestal and Chenango Forks added to their streaks of Section 4 boys lacrosse championships Thursday night.
The Golden Bears won their fifth straight title in Class B with an 11-8 triumph over top-seeded host Ithaca. Vestal now has 11 sectional titles in the last 12 seasons.
Second-seeded Chenango Forks’ second straight Class D crown came courtesy of a 9-8 home victory over fourth-seeded Seton Catholic Central. The Blue Devils laid claim to their fifth sectional championship in the last six seasons.
McMahon leads Vestal triumph
Stars of the Game: Braden McMahon had four goals and an assist, all in the second half, to pace Vestal.
Xavier Shuler added a goal and two assists for the Bears, Tucker Zostant scored two goals and Evan Myers contributed a goal and an assist. Vestal’s other goals came from Sammy Baek, Michael Hogan and Graham Sholett. Rashee Shuler made nine saves in net.
Zach Cartmill scored three goals for Ithaca, whose 13-3 season included a 10-9 victory over Vestal on April 18. Owen Simons had two goals and an assist for the Little Red, and Charles Preheim notched a goal and an assist. Luke VanDeMark and Greg Gorsky added a goal each.
Turning Point: The Golden Bears scored all five goals in the third quarter to grab a 9-5 lead.
“Best quarter we played all season,” Vestal coach Chris Dutkowsky said.
After the teams went scoreless over the final five minutes of the first half, Xavier Shuler scored the tying goal early in the third and Sholett found the back of the net with 9:46 left in the third quarter, giving Vestal the lead for good, 6-5. McMahon scored three straight goals to finish the third quarter.
