A resident of Wayne County, stopped by security officers at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, is now facing a potential penalty after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage.
The incident took place at the TSA checkpoint, where a .380 caliber gun, loaded with six bullets, including one in the chamber, was detected.
Upon inspection by a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy, the weapon was confiscated. The traveler, who was only identified as a Sodus resident, claimed to have forgotten that the loaded gun was in his possession, even though he holds a valid state pistol permit.
Traveling with firearms is only permitted in checked baggage, provided they are unloaded and packed in a locked, hard-sided case. Violations can lead to penalties reaching up to $15,000, and could include loss of TSA PreCheck® privileges for members. In the previous year alone, 6,542 firearms were discovered at 262 out of 430 airport security checkpoints nationwide, with 88% of those guns loaded.
