LOS ANGELES — Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes is headed to the 15-day injured list with a shoulder injury.
Cortes will get an MRI on Monday’s off day to determine the seriousness of his issue.
“I don’t think it’s anything too major, but the last couple times recovering in-between (starts) he had that achiness,” Yankee manager Aaron Boone said. “So we’ll see what we have there.”
With Aaron Judge sidelined for Sunday’s game — a 4-1 Yankee win — after his big toe while making a great catch and slamming into the fence Saturday at Dodger Stadium, the injuries are two more major blows to a club that has had dealt with an incredible amount of injuries for the last five years.

They were the Yankees’ fourth and fifth injuries of a two-city West Coast trip that began in Seattle. Center fielder Harrison Bader went on the injured list last Tuesday with a hamstring strain and on Saturday two more players went on the IL, reliever Ryan Weber with a forearm strain and outfielder Greg Allen with a hip flexor.
Through Saturday, the Yankees already had 10 players on the injured list, eight of them pitchers. For the season, the Yanks have sent 16 players to the IL for a total of 19 stints.
The Yankees had 28 players on the IL last season for 33 stints, 35 players and 49 stints in 2021.
Randy Vazquez or Jhony Brito will be recalled from Triple-A to take Cortes’ spot in the rotation and start Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium against the White Sox.
Both rookie right-handers were up earlier this season. Vazquez , who is 0-1, 3.86 ERA in one start with Yankees, would be on regular rest, Brito, who was 3-3, 5.58 ERA in 10 games, nine of them starts, would pitch on one extra day of rest.
“I have an idea (who it will be), but we’ll make that call here over the next couple days,” Boone said.
Cortes never mentioned having any soreness in his recent interviews and wasn’t available before Sunday’s game.
