ALBANY — A 48-year-old Schenectady man paroled after convictions for sexually assaulting three underage boys in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Monday to trying to arrange an encounter with a would-be fourth victim — an undercover FBI agent posing as a 14-year-old boy in Menands.
Matthew J. Peters, a one-time special education aide for BOCES in Rotterdam and boys soccer coach at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School who was later convicted of multiple counts of sodomy, pleaded guilty to attempted coercion and enticement of a minor for unlawful sexual activity, and committing a felony offense involving a minor by a registered sex offender.
Senior U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe is scheduled to sentence Peters Oct. 10.
Court documents show Peters — a Level 3 or highest-risk sex offender — aggressively approached an undercover FBI agent posing as a 14-year-old boy named “Brandon” on a social media dating network starting Oct. 2, 2020. After exchanging phone numbers and multiple conversations, Peters told “Brandon” he would meet him at his home in Menands and bring lubrication for a supposed sexual encounter. On Oct. 7, 2020, after driving to the location, Peters was arrested.
In 2000, Peters was convicted of second-degree sodomy in Albany and Rensselaer counties for his sexual attacks on a 12-year-boy in a Colonie parking lot and a 13-year-old boy in the victim’s home in East Greenbush. He was sentenced to 2 ½ to 7 years in prison. He served about four years in…
