The New York Mets (30-32) suffered a fifth straight loss on Wednesday night at Truist Park after blowing another three-run lead and falling to the Atlanta Braves (37-24), 7-5.
With the game tied at five in the bottom of the eighth inning, Adam Ottavino entered and gave up a two-out, go-ahead home run to Michael Harris II. That was the difference as the Mets went down quietly in the top of the ninth.
Tommy Pham drove in three of the team’s five runs. He smacked a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, and added a sacrifice fly. Francisco Alvarez crushed his ninth, while Brett Baty chipped in with a run-scoring single.
Max Scherzer allowed five runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. However, the right-hander still struck out a season-high ten batters.
Pete Alonso left the game in the first inning after getting drilled by a 97 mph fastball in his left wrist. He had X-rays during the game that came back negative, but manager Buck Showalter said postgame that he would undergo a CT scan on Thursday. Right now, he is considered day-to-day.
The Mets will try to avoid the three-game sweep on Thursday when they send Justin Verlander to the mound. The first pitch is slated for 7:20 p.m.
