State championships in flux because of air-quality issues

Mike Vorgang is a coach who, along with his assistants Chris DeLano and P.J. Williams, prides himself on having his Niskayuna boys’ lacrosse team prepared for every contingency against any given opponent. Having a state semifinal contest postponed because the air quality index is out of wack is a new one for the veteran mentor who has guided the Silver Warriors to 19 sectional titles and nine appearances in a state final four.

Niskayuna (18-2) and Garden City (16-4) were scheduled to collide Wednesday evening at the University at Albanyโ€™s Bob Ford Field. Earlier in the day, it was announced theย Niskayuna-Garden City contest would be played Thursday at UAlbany. Later, it was changed to 6:30 p.m. Friday.

That’s when the New York State Public High School Athletic Association also stated all outdoor practices throughout the state for championship events in lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and field and boys’ tennis have been canceled.ย ย 

โ€œThe only thing I think we have had in the past was in 2009 when there was a lightning storm,โ€ย Vorgang said when asked if he had ever had a scheduled state playoff game altered.

The remainder of the state playoff schedule for various sports at different locations is scheduled to begin Friday. In addition to Niskayuna in boys’ lacrosse, the Bethlehem girls’ lacrosse team is scheduled to face Victor atย SUNY Cortland on Friday morning,ย Shenendehowa (AA), Columbia (A) and Chatham (C) are competing in the state baseball playoffs in the Binghamton area, Shenendehowa (AA), Troy (A), Ichabod Crane (B), Chatham (C) and Salem (D) are set for semifinal play at the Moriches Athletic Complex. There is the first of two days at Middletown High School for the track and field championships and also Shaker boys’ tennis vs.ย Scarsdale at the National Tennis Center.
