Yankees still can’t score without Aaron Judge, lose to Red Sox in extras

NEW YORK — The wait for the Yankees to break through on offense since Aaron Judge hurt his right big toe at Dodger Stadium last weekend continues.

The Yankees were held to three hits on Sunday night in their 3-2 loss to the Red Sox. After scoring two runs — both coming on a fluke play that should’ve been an out — they’re averaging just three runs per game since Judge’s injury.

Unlike Saturday night’s win over Boston, the Yankees’ pitching staff couldn’t quite carry this club’s reeling offense to a victory. This time around, two runs off the Yankees’ bullpen — including an RBI single from Kiké Hernández in the top of the 10th inning — proved to be the difference.

If it wasn’t for the second base bag, the Yankees wouldn’t have scored at all on Sunday night.

With two men on and two outs in the bottom of the second, Trevino bounced a routine ground ball up the middle. Hernández squatted to field the inning-ending grounder when it caromed off the base, bouncing high into shallow center field. That allowed Josh Donaldson and Billy McKinney to scamper home, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

The starter spun another gem for the Yankees, allowing only one earned run (coming on a Justin Turner solo home run in the second) over 5 1/3 innings pitched. Schmidt has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his last eight starts, posting a 3.42 ERA in that span.

Boston tied the score at 2-2 in the eighth. Hernández led off the inning with a single off reliever Michael King, advancing to second base as Gleyber…
