Spiderman visits, but FerryHawks drop series finale to Lancaster

While Spiderman is known for saving the day in New York City, he couldn’t help the Staten Island FerryHawks on Sunday.

The Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Island’s local pro team, 8-5 on Marvel Super Hero Day at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park, and kids were greeted by a Spiderman character appearance and a limited edition Marvel/FerryHawks poster!

With starter Ryan Hartman on the mound making his debut, the FerryHawks took a 4-0 early lead. A Roldani Baldwin double drove in Ricardo Cespedes to put the FerryHawks on the board. In the second, Cespedes and Jack Elliott both picked up RBI to extend Staten Island’s lead to 3-0 over Lancaster. Elliott came through again in the fourth when he doubled to drive home Cespedes, giving the Hawks a four-run advantage.

Entering the fifth, it seemed as if the FerryHawks (13-24) were in the driver’s seat and on their way to a series victory in front of 1,297 fans. However, the Barnstormers (16-19) had other plans as their bats quickly came to life, sparking a six-run fifth that put them ahead, 6-4. Two more insurance runs in the sixth and eighth extended their lead to 8-4.

The FerryHawks made one last effort in ninth when Mikey Edelman crossed the plate on an Elliott double, but the rally was cut short by the Barnstormers.

Hartman (0-1) had a final line of five Innings, 13 hits, six runs and three strikeouts. The 29-year-old lefty was acquired last week from the Lake Country DockHounds of the American Association. He spent time in the Astros and Orioles organizations and has an MLB appearance to his name with the Astros. He will look to get right in his next start.
