Albany Academy for Girls’ standout golfer Kennedy Swedick made an oral commitment in January to compete for the University of Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Long before the junior will compete in her first event with the Cavaliers, she continues to add impressive layers to her scholastic resume.
Swedick entered the 2023 New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s state tournament at the Edison Club in Rexford as a defending champion. She emerged from the event as a repeat champion as Swedick ended up being the only golfer among the 111-player field to shoot below par. The junior standout fired a 3-under 69 in the final round June 5 to complete her 36-hole journey at 5-under 139. She finished seven strokes better than runner-up Emma Lee, a sophomore from Scarsdale.
For her efforts, Swedick has been selected as the Times Union’s Girls’ Athlete of the Week for the period June 5-11.
It proved to be an excellent all-around showing for Swedick and her teammates, sophomore Samantha Von Rohr (161), senior Nicole Criscone (168) and junior Jillian Rawson (173), as they captured the state team title by finishing 21 strokes ahead of 2022 champion Ursuline.
The latest triumph by Swedick adds to her superlative list of accomplishments. She has competed in the U.S. Girls’ Junior twice and qualified for the Junior PGA Championship four times. The junior has also received a sponsor’s exemption to the Epson Tour’s Twin Bridges Championship at Pinehaven. Last summer, Swedick won the State Women’s Am at McGregor Links in Wilton. That is the same location where Swedick won her first state title in 2022.
Swedick entered the final round carrying a three-shot advantage and was never threatened. After completing her round, the junior talked about pouring all of her energy into what she was doing and nothing else.
“I have a different mindset,” Swedick said. “I’m just…
