Top Mets prospect putting on power display in minors

Ronny Mauricio gave the Mets two more reasons for a call-up In his second game back since an MRI revealed a bone bruise on his left ankle. The 22-year-old hit a pair of home runs while debuting in the outfield for the Syracuse Mets.

Both balls sailed far over the centerfield wall in Sahlen Field, home of the Buffalo Bisons, Torontoโ€™s Class AAA affiliate. Combined, they traveled 872 feet, including one that went 441 feet and had an exit velocity of 111.1 mph.

Mauricio finished the night 3-for-5 with a strikeout. His average exit velocity on batted balls for the evening: 106.2 mph.

Mauricio, whose primary position is shortstop, was also called upon to left field for the first time in his career. It took him a while to get accustomed to his new position, but he quickly grew comfortable.

He was charged with an error after misplaying a line drive in the first inning against the Buffalo Bisons. Later, he comfortably shagged down a line drive for his first putout in the fifth inning.

Mauricio, who is the Metsโ€™ fourth-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is seen as a possible spark the Mets need to kickstart what has been an underwhelming season in Queens. In 62 games for the Metsโ€™ Class AAA affiliate, Mauricio has a .322 batting average and a .907 OPS. Not even Pete Alonso, who leads the National League with 22 home runs, has an OPS that high.
