Jamar Brown, 20, wounded victim in August who survived by “sheer luck,” judge says
ALBANY — A man who shot a person in the South End last summer was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in state prison for attempted murder.
Jamar Brown, 20, of Albany, was also sentenced to five years of supervision after his release from prison under the sentencing by Albany County Judge Andra Ackerman.
In April, Brown pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder for the Aug. 13 shooting near Second Avenue and Hampton Street.
In a news release, Albany County District Attorney David Soares’ office noted that in sentencing Brown, the judge told the defendant of how the victim could have died.
“I think the first person you should be addressing is the victim who you shot and tried to kill, who is going to suffer for the rest of his life. You made not one mention of him,” the judge told Brown, according to the release. “What I want to make clear in my position is that all lives are equal. Yours, mine, and the person you shot. And you tried to take his out. It’s a serious thing… and only by sheer luck he survived.”
Assistant District Attorney Stephen Lydon prosecuted the case.
