Justin Verlander returned to Houston Tuesday night, but his former teammate Framber Valdez outdueled him as the New York Mets fell 4-2 to the Astros, splitting the first two games of this series.
Verlander, who helped the Astros win two World Series titles, allowed four runs on eight hits over seven innings of work.
However, that wasn’t good enough. Valdez held the Mets to two runs on four hits while striking out nine batters. He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before Mark Canha singled with one out.
New York plated both of its runs in the eighth. Canha had a sacrifice fly while Eduardo Escobar plated a run with a single.
The Mets will hand the ball to Tylor Megill on Wednesday at 2:10 p.m. as they try to win the series.
