Clyde-Savannah Central School District has been earmarked to receive a portion of an $850,000 state grant aimed at promoting the consumption of New York-grown produce in schools. The district is set to receive $100,000 to foster connections with local farmers and encourage sustainable farming and gardening education among its students.
The funds will be utilized to enhance existing collaborations with farmers and initiate new ones, offering students an immersive understanding of sustainable farming and gardening practices. This initiative will target students across all grade levels, from 1-12, integrating practical knowledge about local agriculture into the school curriculum.
A key aspect of the program includes the construction of a greenhouse, fostering hands-on educational experiences for students.
Governor Kathy Hochul acknowledged the significance of the Farm-to-School program in her administrationโs agenda. โBy connecting schools and farmers, we are providing critical economic opportunities for farmers and producers while also giving students and underserved populations access to locally sourced, fresh, healthy, and nutritious food,โ she said.
