A man serving prison time in Albany killing now charged in Amsterdam death

A former Albany man already serving time for killing a man on Central Avenue in May 2021 was charged with murder in the slaying of a man in Amsterdam about two months earlier, police said Wednesday.

Naturalwise K. Joseph, 35, was charged with second-degree murder and a weapons charge in the March 12, 2021, killing of Richard M. Lopez, 37, of Amsterdam, police said.

Lopez was found bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head on Hibbard Street in Amsterdam. He was flown to Albany Medical Center Hospital but died the following day. No one was arrested at the time.

On May 21, 2021, Joseph shot and killed 39-year-old Lashon Turner outside 71 Central Ave., Albany. He pleaded guilty to murder in that case about a year later and was sentenced in Albany County Court to a prison term of 18 years to life in prison. He is serving his sentence at the Auburn Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Cayuga County.

Turner, an Albany native and father of five known to friends as โ€œShockโ€ and โ€œShocka,โ€ was one of six homicide victims in May 2021.

The plea deal in Turnerโ€™s death lessened the low end of Josephโ€™s potential prison term by seven years. If convicted at trial of second-degree murder, Joseph faced 25 years to life in prison. He also had been charged with felony possession of a weapon and drug possession.ย

Joseph now faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in the Amsterdam case, which is likely to be prosecuted in Montgomery County Court.
