Security audit shows New York’s water systems are at risk: What does that mean?

New York’s water systems outside of New York City have often failed to update their assessments of vulnerability to potential threats, according to an audit released by Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office.

The report revealed that approximately 10% of the 317 water systems reviewed had out-of-date emergency response plans and vulnerability assessments.

Notably, despite the increasing threat of cyberattacks, 9% of the water systems had not submitted a cyber vulnerability report since 2018.

The lack of updated threat assessments is concerning as water systems are not immune to cyberattacks.

Cases have already occurred in which hackers targeted water dams and gained access to water treatment controls.

The state is looking at methods to take control of the situation.
