FDNY shuts Brooklyn e-bike shop over lithium-ion battery danger

An e-bike business in Brooklyn was shuttered for illegally storing lithium-ion batteries and other “egregious” violations of New York City’s fire code, officials said Friday.

Sky Bike Technology Inc. of 5709 Fifth Ave. in Sunset Park was closed Thursday evening after inspectors found batteries stored in the business with illegal modifications, the Fire Department said.

A notice posted in the business’s storefront on Friday cited “illegal storage of lithium-ion batteries and numerous fire code violations leading to a condition imminently perilous to life and property” as the reason for the store’s shutdown.

No one answered phone numbers listed for Sky Bike Technology on Friday.

Lithium-ion batteries are blamed for 111 fires that have killed 13 people and injured 81 so far this year.

Four people died June 20 in a blaze sparked by lithium-ion batteries in a repair shop in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

Batteries in the storefront business reignited for days afterward as the Fire Department and a city contractor tried to clean the scene.
