Mets use long ball to top Giants

The New York Mets (37-56) got back in the win column Saturday evening with a 4-1 victory over the San Franciso Giants (46-37) at Citi Field.

New York used three solo home runs and a dominant pitching performance from Justin Verlander.

Francisco Alvarez (13), Brandon Nimmo (12), and Francisco Lindor (17) all went deep in the third inning. Tommy Pham added a run-scoring double in the fourth and that was all they needed.

Verlander tossed seven innings of one-run ball, which was an unearned run because of Pete Alonsoโ€™s throwing error. The right-hander also struck out, improving to 3-4 on the season.

Drew Smith and Adam Ottavino had scoreless appearances out of the bullpen.

The Mets will try to win their first series in a month on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Left-hander David Peterson will take the ball.
