CNY Inspirations: A spiritual practice for summertime

Summer is my favorite season. Itโ€™s the time of year when I can get outside more frequently and explore all the natural beauty that Central New York has to offer. We are fortunate to live in an area that has numerous lakes, parks, and nature preserves that can all be accessed for little or no cost.

I never want to waste a day of sunshine. Therefore, in summer, I am intentional about finding new places to experience nature. Itโ€™s more than just a pastime or hobby for me. Itโ€™s good for my body and mind, but more importantly, itโ€™s a spiritual practice.

Whether Iโ€™m hiking at Green Lakes or paddling a kayak on Oneida Lake, my thoughts slow down. Iโ€™m forced to disconnect from the incessant stream of phone notifications and internet information. I can leave the virtual world behind and turn my attention to the real web of life that sustains us all – a complex ecosystem filled with mysteries to explore.

During these times in a forest or out on the water, Iโ€™m able to be more observant and present. Thereโ€™s nothing to distract me from taking time to wonder at the shape of a leaf, to pause at a pond and look for turtles, or to gaze up at the trees and try to identify what kind of bird is flitting above me.

Experiencing natural wonder is a spiritual practice because it redirects my thoughts to a world thatโ€™s bigger than myself. At least for a short while, I can transcend whatever problems have been plaguing my mind. I find myself filled with gratitude for life and the world we live in, and I feel Godโ€™s presence when Iโ€™m immersed in all that God has created.

If youโ€™re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, I encourage you to get outside and experience the natural joys that summer brings.
