Runoff concerns create potential issues for Owasco River over holiday weekend

A High Flow Event has been declared for the Owasco River due to substantial rainfall in the Owasco Lake Watershed area. Officials predict the riverโ€™s flow will exceed 1000 cubic feet per second (CFS) for several days and likely continue throughout the July 4th holiday week.

Public safety concerns are paramount, with the authorities urging citizens to maintain distance from the Owasco River and exercise extreme caution in its vicinity. The potential for localized flooding around the river and other waterways within the city is high, posing a significant risk of personal injury. The City of Auburn, in particular, may face downstream flooding. In light of these risks, the public is advised to avoid unnecessary contact with the river and other tributaries during the high flow period.

The Auburn Department of Municipal Utilities is actively monitoring the river flow and potential downstream flooding impacts. Reduction of flow in the Owasco River is projected to occur once the upstream flows and lake elevation return to normal.
