Wounded NYC subway surfer Widinson Garcia may never walk again

As wounded teen subway surfer Widinson Garcia lies amid a labyrinth of tubes and wires at a Queens medical center, family say the teen daredevil has finally begun the slow road to recovery.

โ€œHeโ€™s conscious, he can speak,โ€ an aunt told the Daily News. โ€œWe would like to think that he will get a good recovery.โ€

Widinson, 14, is the sole survivor of the dangerous stunt that claimed the life of 14-year-old Briyan Crespo, after both boys were struck while riding atop a Manhattan-bound L train as it approached the Bushwick Ave.-Aberdeen St. station in Brooklyn last month, according to police.

The eighth-grade students were skipping school when they climbed onto the trainโ€™s roof at Broadway Junction in East New York โ€” where the subway tracks are elevated above ground โ€” at around 2 p.m. on June 22, cops said.

Investigators believed the boys were struck as the train plunged into the tunnel ahead of the Bushwick Ave.-Aberdeen St. station, less than one stop away, according to NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper.

Rescuers found the teensโ€™ bodies lying on the rail bed, one dead and one clinging to life, but it wasnโ€™t until Briyanโ€™s mother arrived on the scene that it was determined which boy had survived, she said.

Friends gather at a memorial for Briyan Crespo at Rosemary's Playground in Ridgewood, Queens this afternoon. Candles, posters with loving sentiments, an Ecuadorian Flag, and other mementos can be seen in memory of Briyan Crespo.

โ€œThey told me they didnโ€™t know who was who, but that my son was in the hospital or had passed,โ€ said Sonia. โ€œI told them about my son, and they determined [Briyan had died].โ€

Paramedics rushed Garcia to Cohen Childrenโ€™s Medical Center in Queens in what Kemper described as a โ€œvery serious condition with serious trauma to his body.โ€

Since Widinson has regained consciousness, family have been working hard to lift his spirits. But his wounds have taken a heavy toll on the once lively teen, his aunt said.

โ€œI just tried to joke around with him,โ€ she said. โ€œHeโ€™s just tired.โ€

A GoFundMe page created to help support Garciaโ€™s family and pay his medical bills noted that the teenage boy may never walk again.
