Several people from countries including Peru and Canada took an oath of allegiance to become American citizens during Fourth of July ceremonies on Tuesday at Albany’s Empire State Plaza. 

Also Tuesday, The Underground Railroad Education Center in Albany sponsored a celebration titled “July 4th Oration — Speaking Truth to Power” at Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence at 194 Livingston Ave. It featured readings from the 1963 March On Washington, Frederick Douglass’ 1852 speech at Rochester and music by the duo Magpie along with singer Kim Harris.
