3 dead, 7 injured at July 4th party

Police in Louisiana are investigating a mass shooting that left three people dead and seven injured during an annual Fourth of July block party.

The Shreveport Police Department said 10 people were shot and three died in the shooting that took place early Wednesday morning in the city’s MLK neighborhood.

Of the injured, one was in critical condition, police told the Shreveport Times, part of the USA TODAY Network. The other six other victims were expected to recover.

It was not known if any arrest had been made in connection to the shooting.

A press conference is slated for 10 a.m CT.

The shooting is among a handful of other fatal shootings that took place across the nation during the July 4th weekend, including one in Philadelphia and one in Washington D.C.

Difficulty reaching victims

Local TV stations KSLA and KTBS reported police said it was difficult for first responders to initially reach the scene because there were so many cars at the party.

โ€œGetting here and getting EMS here was a difficult thing,” Shreveport police Lt. Van Wray told KSLA. “A lot of us had to park our cars and take off running because there were so many cars on the side of the street.”

District A Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor told the outlet the shooting took place a an annual block party.

โ€œThis should not happen. Now we are the victims of a mass shooting in our community,” It is trauma for those individuals that only wanted to have a very good time on this holiday,โ€ she said.
