Details of police involved shooting released

NEW ROCHELLE – State Police have released details of an incident in New Rochelle in which a police officer shot a suspect.

Troopers said at about 4:30 p.m. on July 3, New Rochelle Police responded to a local grocery store for a larceny complaint.

Responding officers confronted Jerrel Garris, 37, for allegedly stealing items from the store.

Officers Kari Bird, Garbrielle Chavarry and Det. Steven Conn attempted to arrest Garris when he reached for an officer’s gun in its holster and Det. Conn fired one round from his department issued firearm striking Garris. No other rounds were fired.

Garris was transported to Westchester Medical Center where he remains in critical condition, troopers said.

The incident is under investigation by the State Police and Westchester District Attorney’s Office.
