Haverstraw man killed in Town of Highlands crash

TOWN OF HIGHLANDS – A 28-year-old Haverstraw man was killed in a two-car crash on Route 293 in the Town of Highlands around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, State Police said.

According to troopers, a 2019 BMZ 335i, driven by Dillon Ortiz, was traveling northbound and passed a dump truck that was also traveling north on the eastern shoulder.

After passing the truck, Ortiz reentered the road and crossed over into the southbound lane, striking a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado on the driver side causing the BMW to leave the road and roll over off the shoulder coming to rest in a wooded area.

Ortiz suffered a serious head injury, was transported to Westchester Medical Center and was pronounced dead, troopers said.

Dina Vasto, 28, of Lyndhurst, New Jersey, a passenger in the pick-up truck, sustained a broken leg and was treated at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

The driver was not injured.
