A popular energy drink marketed on social media to kids by social media influencers Logan Paul and KSI has more than three times the caffeine as Red Bull, posing an alarming health danger to youngsters, New Yorkโs Sen. Charles Schumer said Sunday.
Prime energy drink needs to be investigated by the federal Food and Drug Administration over its marketing tactics and its labeling, the Brooklyn Democrat said.
โOne of the summerโs hottest status symbols for kids is not an outfit, or a toy โ itโs a beverage โ but buyer and parents beware because itโs a serious health concern for the kids it so feverishly targets,โ said Schumer in a statement.
The companyโs website lacks warnings, and unsuspecting parents should know that a 12 ounce can of Prime has 200 milligrams of caffeine, Schumer said.
By comparison, a 12 ounce can of Coca Cola contains 34 mg of caffeine, and an 8.4 ounce can of Red Bull has 80 mg, his statement said.
โThis is eye-popping levels of caffeine for a childโs body,โ Schumer said.
โPrime is so new that most parents havenโt a clue about it, but it is born from the reels of social media and the enigmatic world of influencers,โ he said. โKids see it on their phones or as they scroll.โ
Unlike Red Bull, he said, Prime targets children under age 18.
โThat is why I am sounding the alarm and asking the FDA to investigate Prime,โ he said.

The zero-sugar drink in neon-colored cans first was released last year in the U.K. in flavors like tropical punch, blue raspberry and strawberry watermelon.
Its website says: โPrime was developed to fill the void where great taste meets function. With bold, thirst-quenching flavors to help you refresh, replenish, and refuel, Prime is the perfect boost for any endeavor. Weโre confident youโll love it as much as we do.โ
